We're thrilled to announce a significant milestone for outdoor enthusiasts in our area! The New England National Scenic Trail, a breathtaking 235-mile trail extending from Connecticut's Long Island Sound to the New Hampshire border, has been officially designated as a unit of the National Park System. This trail, known for its stunning landscapes and rich history, traverses through Massachusetts, offering local hikers a national park experience right in our backyard.

Along its route in Massachusetts, the trail winds through several state parks and forests, including Mount Tom State Reservation, Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Mount Grace State Forest, and Royalston Falls. Whether you're looking for a short half-mile stroll or a more challenging 13-mile hike, this trail has something for everyone. It showcases the best of New England's beauty, featuring traprock ridges, historic village centers, farmlands, forests, streams, river valleys, and waterfalls.

This trail, with a history spanning over 50 years, was first recognized at the federal level in 2009. It encompasses parts of various trails across Connecticut and Massachusetts, such as the Mattabesett, Menunkatuck, Metacomet, and Metacomet-Monadnock trails.

In addition to our local gem, two other trails – the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Wisconsin and the North Country National Scenic Trail running from Vermont to North Dakota – have also received national park status. This recognition aims to increase public awareness and encourage exploration of these remarkable pathways.

With this latest inclusion, the number of national parks in the United States has grown to 428. This new status for the New England Trail places it alongside other renowned trails like the Appalachian, Natchez Trace, and Potomac Heritage, which are already part of the national park system.
